At the Takapuna library, we picked up a book of local walks and were surprised to discover that we have the giant kauri trees very close. Time to put on the walking boots and explore...

A strong easterly wind brought storms and giant waves to Mairangi Bay, which is very unusual. There were even a few surfers out.
Time for celebrations again...Hannah has been in her job for 5 years and received a bottle of champagne and a voucher. We decided to go out for a very nice meal in the city, preceded by cocktails!

Another great local walking area that we have not visited much is the grounds of the sugar refinery on the north shore. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, we headed out there and got some amazing views of the city.
By this time, we had been in Auckland for about 4 weekends in a row and were getting itchy feet to head away. We decided on Rotorua as we always have fun there and it doesn't matter what the weather is like. However, we were in luck and had sunshine and blue skies on both days. Rather than dashing down via our usual route, we decided to make a stop at the Hamilton gardens and we were pleasantly surprised!
Hamilton Gardens, set alongside the Waikato river
Japanese contemplation garden, complete with autumnal maple tree
White doves in the English flower garden
The Chinese gardens, including temples, bridges and bamboo
The Indian garden with an array of wild flowers
The Italian Renaissance garden

The maori food garden
We had no idea that such a place existed and really enjoyed a couple of hours walking around. In Rotorua, we spent a wonderful day mountain biking in the forest, but didn't take the camera!
