Easter weekend in Dunedin

We woke to a very sunny Good Friday in Dunedin (we had heard that the sun never shone in this "Scottish" city!). Unfortunately, we had not anticipated that the majority of shops, museums and restaurants would all be closed. Thankfully, we found a little cafe serving great coffee in the Octagon and set up base for some postcard writing!

The old railway station that we had arrived in to the previous evening looked beautiful in the sunshine. We had cycled through the quarry several days earlier that supplied the station its rock.

A beautiful afternoon to wander through Otago University.

Saturday morning started with a trip to the Farmers market to pick up lunch and some very crunchy apples.

We picked up a car and headed down the Otago penninsular to see albatross, penguins and sea lions. We spotted an albatross flying overhead from here with its 3-meter wing span!

Dad got up close to sea lions...

We headed to Sandfly Bay to the DOC hide for penguin spotting!

The world's steepest street was our first stop on Easter Sunday morning.

However, our main aim of the day was to visit the Moeraki bolders. Having lived in New Zealand for 3 years, this is one of the few places we have never visited and it didn't disappoint...

We all liked them so much that we went back at high tide!

While we were in the area, we also visited Oamaru - a strange town of beautiful gardens, old buildings and bikes, and hidden penguins!

Back in Dunedin for a final holiday meal before our flight back to Auckland in the morning.
