Central Otago Rail Trail

Before arriving in NZ, we had signed Dad up for the Central Otago Rail Trail - a 4-day, 150-km cycle through the amazing, mountains and gorges of Central Otago (between Queenstown and Dunedin) going via the old viaducts and tunnels!

Day 1 - Clyde to Omakau

Ready to start!

First bridge crossing

Autumn colours

Long straight roads to cycle side-by-side

A well earned rest

Rainbow Dad

Ophir suspension bridge

Day 2 - Omakau to Wedderburn

Stamping the "official" Rail Trail Passport at stations along the way

Victorian cyclists emerging from tunnel

Gold mine

Huge portions for hungry cyclists

Day 3 - Wedderburn to Waipiata

A frosty start to day 3 with snow on the tops of the mountains

Cramp prevention?

Snow-capped peaks

Day 4 - Waipiata to Middlemarch

Hannah and "fluro John" on the tracks

Made it to Middlemarch just in time to catch the Taieri Gorge Railway train to Dunedin. Wonderful to finish the 4 days being on a train that was once part of the system we had been cycling!
