To take advantage of the long Labour Day weekend in NZ, we took a trip up to the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula, which jutts out on a separate piece of land to the east of Auckland. Having checked the tides, we set off on Saturday morning for hot water beach, where, at low tide, you can dig your own thermal spa pool in the sand! Volcanoes beneath the earth's surface heat spring water to 60 degrees celcius. Unfortunately, the area where you can dig is actually pretty small and lots of other people had decided to head that way for low tide too. So, in the end, we took a nice long walk along the rest of the beach, which was deserted!

We decided to head up and over the mountain range via Coromandel town to the very northern tip of the Coromandel. The last 30km of the drive was unsealed, so few people make the journey up this way. We pitched our tent on the sea front at Port Jackson and listened to the waves all night (we hadn't quite banked on them being so noisy!!).

Camping at Port Jackson
On Sunday morning we woke early and headed to Fletcher Bay. We walked from here to Poley Bay and had some great views of the coast line, farmlands and across to Great Barrier Island.
